Pencil Icon Instructions

Step 1:

Start Blender.

Save your Blender project now with a useful name in your H: drive:

  • Keystroke: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • Menu: File-->Save

Doing this before you begin will allow Blender's autosave feature to keep a backup of your work.

Step 2:

Design a scene that uses only mesh objects to portray a real world object or scene that others would recognize. The result doesn't need to be perfect, but what you are creating should be clear to others.

You can use any of these primitive mesh shapes for this assignment:

  • Cone
  • Circle*
  • Cube
  • Cylinder
  • Icosphere
  • Plane
  • Torus
  • UV Sphere

You can move, rotate, and scale these as you wish. However, DO NOT use other shapes.

*A circle needs to be filled in with faces for it to be visible in the scene. It may be easier to use a short cylinder.

Step 3:

Look at your scene through your camera.

  • Keystroke: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • Menu: View-->Viewpoint-->Camera

To move your camera to the current viewport view:

  • Generated Keyboard Shortcut

You will most likely need to "frame" your scene. This means moving the camera until it "sees" your scene from a desirable angle.

  • Select the camera border in Camera View (if it isn't already orange)
  • Free Move:  Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • Left/Right: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • Up/Down: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • In/Out: Generated Keyboard Shortcut     -or-  Generated Keyboard Shortcut+ Middle Mouse

Note: Pressing the X, Y or Z axis keys more than once changes movement from Global to Local orientation.

Step 4:

Save your Blender project:

  • Keystroke: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
  • Menu: File-->Save

Always save before going to the next step. Though it doesn't happen often, the next step can potentially cause Blender or your system to crash.

Step 5:

When you are happy with the result, follow these steps:

  1. Render the scene to an image: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
    Render-->Render Image from the menu
  2. Save the image: Generated Keyboard Shortcut
    Image-->Save from the menu.

Step 6:

Check the grading criteria (see below) before you submit your assignment.
